VETERANS OF LANE COUNTY: EVENTS
Well, you may have read in the Register Guard that I said the R's could have the bridge. It was a mis-quote but works as pure diversion. We are going to be on the Bridge in force with other county Kerry supporters no later than 3:00 P.M.
The strategy has been set in place and plans prepared. We will claim and hold that ground just as John Kerry intends to keep his promises to the people. We realize the importance of showing a strong will and that is what we will do. Please don't get too fired up though, we want this to be very peaceful with an accommodating theme to the Bush side. We will occupy only half of the area and clearly leave the other half for the Bush folks.
Your Line Capt. will be Rick Grosscup. Please show him the respect due that position. He will establish the lines and hand out fact sheets to you as you arrive to explain what you should do if you encounter any unpleasant situations with the Bush group. He will also try to ensure that no incidents occur by possibly providing you with directions that might make the experience more enjoyable. Video cameras will be there to record all activities. Don't miss out on this final show of the bridge campaign. We would really like to see 50+ up there. It is very important you are there by 3:00 P.M. to have us arriving prior to any Bush supporters. Please RSVP if you will be at the bridge by calling Rick @ 343-8484. Rick's email is [email protected].
ALSO ON FRIDAY - WADE SANDERS/JIM RASSMAN VISIT/EVENT
Wade Sanders and Jim Rassman will be arriving at the Eugene Airport at 5:00 P.M. They will be at the Carry Oregon Headquarters @ 114 E. 16th from 5:20 - 5:50 P.M. and at a U of O press event from 6:00 - 6:45 (location tba). They will then return to the airport for a flight to Medford.
Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, distinguished combat veteran, and retired Navy Captain, Wade Sanders is much published on matters of national security in major newspapers and the Naval Institute Proceedings. He is also a news commentator for NBC News. His imaginative and innovative initiatives were key elements in the transformation of the Reserve Components of the Armed Services from Cold War mobilization assets to relevant providers of contemporary support.
FINAL VOLUNTEER DAYS:
SAT., SUN., & MON. Will be very important days for the campaign and you need to take any time you possibly can to come to the Lane County Headquarters and volunteer to canvass, make phone calls or any other volunteer effort they may need. There are still and will still be many people out there holding election envelops that we need to help them get in. Only you can help accomplish this necessary and important feat.
TUESDAY, NOV. 2, 6:00 P.M. - ??? VETS' CLUB ELECTION RETURNSJoin the other Democrats and Kerry volunteers to watch as the election results roll in. There will be a large screen for viewing, a no-host bar, live music and food. We are asking everyone to bring some finger food to share -- anything that doesn't require a plate or a fork. Full dinners can be ordered from Mac's.

We need bodies there tofill the room. If you haven't seen it yet and can fit it in this is a goodopportunity to see a fabulous film about John Kerry before, during and afterVietnam. You will be impressed by him. I highly recommend it. Also, a goodthing to bring any of your "undecided" friends or family to see.

General Meeting Minutes 10-14-04
Lane County for Kerry-Edwards (LC4KE)
http://www.lanecountyforkerry.org
PO box 2116, Eugene, OR 97402
General Meeting Minutes 10-14-04 7:00 PM,
Upstairs ballroom of Vet’s Building
Attended by approximately 122 people
ANNOUNCEMENTS: This is the last general meeting LC4KE will hold before the election. Mike gave LK4KE steering committee members time to make announcements. Hart told us to stay positive, and reported that he's pressed and given away 200 lbs of buttons. Post meeting note: As of 10/38, Hart had distributed over 700 lawn signs and 75 pounds of bumper stickers.
Debbie announced that she and Marilyn would sell tee shirts at the end of the meeting for $7.00 each. Judy publicly thanked several volunteers. Marilyn asked people to keep volunteering at the phone bank through November 2. Amy announced that there will be a no host bar and a TV coverage of the election at the Vet's Club on November 2, starting around 6 PM. Larry circulated a hat to collect for the room. Val reported that the Bush campaign has pulled out of Washington to focus on Oregon. They are dumping tons of money in Oregon. The only way we can win is with grass roots efforts.
Amy presented Mike with a sweatshirt that said, "Mike, the Man, the Myth, the Legend".
Mike introduced Carry Oregon coordinator for Lane County, Shum, who rallied the troops and expressed appreciation for the reception he's received in Eugene. 1500 to 1600 people have volunteered in Eugene to help Kerry win. We need to ensure a high enough win margin that there is no doubt that Kerry is the victor of the election. We have all the momentum coming into this race. Americans finally had a chance to see the real John Kerry in the debates. Interestingly, Bush and Kerry both had the same debate coaches at the university. Shum asked for canvassing and phone help in the next 17 days. Stu expressed appreciation to everybody that has come out in hoards, rain or shine, to canvass. Eugene doesn't just talk, when it comes to canvassing, we walk the walk.
Shum introduced national co-chair of women for Kerry and Oregon superintendent of education, Susan Castillo. Susan said people are talking about the grass roots effort and the buzz in Lane County. We're part of an amazing energy Oregon has had tremendous challenges in funding our schools. No Child Left Behind has not been adequately funded, and special ed in this country has never been adequately funded. Susan has no doubt that John Kerry will keep his promise to fund federal state mandates. Susan is inspired by his commitment to children.
Women will once again be a critical part of deciding who's going to be the next president. 22 million unmarried women did not vote in 2000. They say they didn't have time, information, and were intimidated by the political process. Because we know this will be such a close vote, every one of us needs to talk to people feeling that way. Kerry wants to insure and take care of all children in this country. We are confident that we are going to be able to deliver Oregon for Kerry. She thanked all of us for out commitment. Susan received a standing ovation at the end of her speech.
Shum next introduced Carole King. She went on the radio today and invited Republican and, un-decideds to attend tonight, and welcomed anybody that came. She is from a small town and even before she came here, she knew how to say Willamette.
Carole is involved with an environmental group and respects John Kerry's record on the environment. She is also a friend of John Kerry and his wife, Teresa. Teresa's foundation has spent years and money to make the world better. John Kerry wants this job to make the world better. That is his impetus. She's been traveling with Kerry since November and has seen him listen to people tell him their story. Kerry takes these stories with him. Carole has been in all the battle ground states except Nevada and Florida and Pennsylvania And she will be going to those states before the election. All over the country, Carole has noticed there are Republicans moving over to John Kerry and John Edwards. She said to tell anybody that says they're going to vote for Nader that Carole King is going to hunt them down. We do not need to send another message; we need to send a president. And that president is John Kerry.
Carole said that we need to reiterate to anybody that asks, that Kerry voted to give Bush the authorization to go to war only after all other processes had been pursued. Carole is one of the people that will have to pay more taxes under President Kerry, and she is only too glad to pay her fair share, as are many people she's spoken with. At the end of Carole's talk, a member of the audience asked to sing one song. She asked us to join her in "You've Got A Friend." Carole thanked us for all the work we've done and received a standing ovation.
People then broke to sign up for canvassing or ballot parties, and the meeting was adjourned.

Leave No Voter Behind
Late last month, we launched Leave No Voter Behind, our huge, ambitious battleground-state plan to turn out over 400,000 new voters for Kerry. Now we're gearing up for our final push. As you know, Oregon is one of the most important swing states in this election, and it could go either way. Together, we can win it for John Kerry. But it's an "all hands on deck" situation, and we all need to help.
On Monday, October 25, we're holding an urgent meeting at The Atrium in downtown Eugene to discuss how folks in the greater Eugene/Springfield area can play a key role. For more info, or to sign up, click here:
http://action.moveonpac.org/lnvb/
At the meeting, MoveOn staff will explain how we can turn out dozens of new voters in each of our neighborhoods, with help from new technology and folks in non-battleground states. Even if you're not certain you can commit to being part of this program, please come - we'd love to share our plan with you and get your feedback. Here are the details:
Leave No Voter Behind Community Meeting
Monday, October 25
7 p.m.
The Atrium [99 W. 10th Ave.]
Downtown
EugeneMoveOn PAC Office Number: 541-434-2460
It is crucial that we all work together to so we can win on November 2. Bring your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers who want to Beat Bush. With only 10 days left there is no time to wait. If you can come, please sign up at:
http://action.moveonpac.org/lnvb/
If you can't make the meeting but would still like to play a key role in this campaign, please click here:

Florida taught us in 2000 that just a handful of votes can decide a presidential election and the fate of a nation, and it may come down to a handful again this year. By talking with voters as a part of Leave No Voter Behind, you can make that difference. Together we plan to take our country back. This is our chance to make history--with your help.
Please join your neighbors in launching this exciting new program in your community. Click here:
http://action.moveonpac.org/lnvb/
We've done bake sales. We've done house parties. We've run great ads. Now it's time for the home stretch -- getting out each and every vote where it counts. Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Adam Ruben, Field Director, MoveOn PAC
Doug O'Malley, Eugene Lead Field Organizer

P.S. The Atrium is right across from the bus station in downtown Eugene and is kitty corner from the Eugene Library and at the cross streets of W. 10th Ave. and Olive St.

Vets Events for the Week of 10/17
REMINDER WEDNESDAY MORNING 10/20
There will be a small media event for Mothers of current service personnel at the Vets Club, 16th & Willamette @ 10:15 tomorrow morning. We need a few vets to show up so if you're not working at that time please come by. It will be in the Chess room upstairs. This will include some wonderful ladies who are traveling all over and the guest speaker will be Cameron Kerry, John Kerry's brother. All are invited, bring a mother of a vet if you can.
THURSDAY EVENING 10/21 - MOVIE: "GOING UP RIVER" -
EVERYONE IS INVITED
This is the regular Thursday evening vets night. Our primary event is the showing of the movie "Going Up-River." The movie is playing in theaters now but we have been graced with a copy for this special presentation. The movie documents John Kerry's time in Vietnam and afterwards during his involvement in the protest movement. I've been told that it is a wonderful movie and clarifies many issues. We are renting a large screen and video projector that will make watching the film much easier than trying to watch the TVs we had during the debates. We will accept donations to pay for the video equipment and room during the evening. Everyone is invited. This is not restricted to anyone. Bring a friend, especially if a friend still has questions about John Kerry's post-war activities.
FRIDAY 4-6 SIGNS ON FERRY STREET BRIDGE
We're not done yet. This Friday and next Friday are critical for being on the Ferry Street Bridge with those signs. Last week we were overwhelmed by Bush supporters. Help us get a huge number out there. Pick your own time and stay as long or short a time as you can. We definitely need to get started by 4 PM. I will have hand-held signs there for those of you with no sign. Home-made signs are acceptable.
SATURDAY & SUNDAY - NO REST UNTIL IT IS OVER
Sign up at the Carry Oregon for canvassing. There is still lots to do and people love seeing vets out there pushing the vote.

THIS IS YOUR MOMENT
In one week, ballots will be delivered to every registered voter in
Oregon. We are calling on ALL Oregonians (who want to see Bush
defeated) to help us deliver victory for John Kerry and all of our
Oregon Democrats. We have one month to mobilize and execute the most
incredible grassroots program to get out the vote that this country
has ever seen. For those who have volunteered for us before, thank
you so much. For those of you who have been waiting until the race
gets down to the wire, THIS IS YOUR MOMENT.
Since the Oregon primary, we have had thousands of people volunteer
for our campaign. Every day and night we are on the phones talking
to undecided voters. Every day and night we are walking around Lane
County, knocking doors and asking Oregonians for their support.
We have a goal to double our volunteer base in the next week. In 8
days, we will unleash the greatest get out vote program this state
has ever seen. We are going to be walking neighborhoods, knocking on
our supporters' doors and picking up their ballots. We will also be
calling supporters and reminding them to drop their ballots in the
mail or at a drop-off location. PLEASE JOIN OUR HISTORIC EFFORT. We
have done an incredible amount of work so far, but none of it
matters if we cannot deliver the votes to elect John Kerry and the
other Democrats on the ticket.
The information below is very important. *Please take a look at our
needs, take out your calendar and determine what days/nights you can
dedicate to changing this world.* Please forward this email to
friends, neighbors, and family who want to get involved with the
presidential campaign.
